How to Schedule Your Engagement Session: A Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Story
One of the things I really love about engagement season is that it’s officially when your wedding starts to become real. It’s that special gap in time between saying "Yes" and saying "I do." While wedding planning can sometimes feel like a flurry of checklists and decisions, your engagement session is meant to be the exact opposite: a relaxed, intimate opportunity to celebrate your unique connection, capture your authentic love, and just have fun together.
I firmly believe your engagement photos should be so much more than just beautiful pictures. They should feel like you.
If you’re ready to get your session on the calendar, here is a step-by-step guide to help you schedule and plan an engagement shoot that feels like a love letter to your story.
Step 1: Envision the Vibe
Before looking at calendars, take a moment together and ask each other: Where do we feel most like ourselves?
Your engagement session isn't just about pretty backdrop scenery, it's about setting a scene where your romance naturally unfolds.
Are you homebodies? Imagine a cozy, intimate session at home, making coffee together or cuddling on the porch.
Are you adventurers? Picture a golden-hour hike outdoors, or a quiet walk along the shore where the tide meets your feet.
Are you city lovers? Think about strolling through the neighborhood where you had your first date, stopping by your favorite cocktail bar or coffee shop.
The Golden Rule: The more personal the location, the more sentimental your images will be years from now.
Step 2: Choose the Perfect Timing
Light is the secret ingredient that gives engagement photos their soft, romantic glow. When looking at your calendar, keep the time of day in mind:
Golden Hour (Sunrise or Sunset): I highly recommend scheduling your shoot roughly 60 to 90 minutes before sunset (or right at sunrise, if you’re early risers (I am!)). The light during these hours is soft, warm, and dreamy—perfect for creating tender, timeless portraits.
Seasonal Magic: Consider what season reflects your personality best. Do you love the bloom of spring, the warmth of summer, the rich colors of autumn, or the crisp, cozy intimacy of winter?
Pro Tip: If you plan to use your engagement photos for "Save the Date" cards, I recommend scheduling your session at least 8 to 10 months before your wedding date to give plenty of time for editing, printing, and mailing.
Step 3: Curate Outfits That Feel Completely You
What you wear should complement your location and make you feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful.
Prioritize Movement and Comfort: Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and comfortable shoes allow for natural movement. If you're constantly adjusting a tight outfit or nursing sore feet, it’s hard to stay in the moment!
Coordinate, Don't Match: Choose a cohesive color palette (neutrals, earth tones, or soft pastels work really well) rather than wearing matching outfits.
Bring Two Looks: Many couples choose one slightly elevated/formal look and one casual, relaxed outfit. This adds another layer to your galleries variety.
Step 4: Add Personal Details & Romantic Touches
This is where the magic really happens. To make your session truly one-of-a-kind, think of small ways to infuse your personal history into the shoot:
Bring your furry friend: If you have a dog, bring them along for a few photos! (Just bring a friend or handler to hold the leash for the rest of the session).
Include a shared hobby: Bring a picnic basket with your favorite charcuterie, a pair of bicycles, or pop a favorite bottle of champagne.
Revisit your story: End the session at the ice cream shop down the street, or grab a late-night slice of pizza together in your fancy attire (I’m a big fan of the latter).
Step 5: Make It a Date Night
On the day of your session, treat the experience not as a chore to check off your wedding list, but as a full-fledged date night.
Get dressed up, listen to your favorite music on the drive over, and leave the stress of daily life behind. Take a deep breath, hold hands, and let us capture the unscripted, beautiful laugher and quiet moments in between. Afterwards? Go out to a romantic dinner to celebrate!
